Journal Prompt Ideas for Autumn Equinox

In the Northern Hemisphere, September 21-24 marks the time of the Autumn Equinox or “Mabon”. This time reminds us that Winter is indeed coming and we are in the middle of a constant, transformative cycle. According to Welsh lore, the great river goddess Madron gave birth to Mabon. As the divine son of a divine mother, Mabon was a target and was tragically kidnapped at only 3 days old. He is often depicted as a prisoner who is rescued many years later and is reborn as the “Son of Light”. If you’re interested in reading more mythology like this, The Mabinogion is an excellent resource. The story of Mabon reminds us of the ways in which even terrible darkness can be transmuted into light, of the balance within time itself, and that though there are moments of death and destruction there can also be a time of rebirth. It reminds me of the bare branches of Autumn. Though the fallen leaves are dead and decaying on the earth, their descent will allow for new life to take their place when the time is right.

Whether you view the Autumn Equinox as a major energy shift within the universe or just consider it a literal change in season… even if you don’t identify with the pagan practices or the rituals of our ancestors, you can still take this time to pause and look within. Say goodbye to the summer with love and gratitude and welcome the change of pace. You can take a moment to acknowledge and reflect upon the blessings in your life and the areas still needing growth. I have created a list of journaling prompts as a useful tool for introspection when confronting this time of change. Consider completing this in a space that’s special or sacred to you, where you won’t be interrupted. Play calming piano music and light candles of autumnal colors (red, white, orange). I recommend meditating before you begin this exercise, as a means of relaxing your nervous system and being as present as possible. I have included questions pertaining to the major themes of Mabon – growth and time – past, present, and future. I hope you find it thought provoking.

BLESSED MABON AND HAPPY HARVEST! ♡
